Skin Cancer - Know Your Risks & How To Protect Your Skin

How your dermatologist in Oklahoma City, OK, can help you prevent skin cancer

Spending time out in the sun feels great, but it also puts you at risk for skin cancer. You can do a lot to protect your skin and your dermatologist can help. Dr. Elizabeth Parro Gawey at Gawey Dermatology in Oklahoma City, OK, provides a wide range of skincare services, including prevention and treatment of skin cancer.

Skin cancer is a common problem. In fact, over 3 million people in the United States are treated for skin cancers other than myeloma, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

You are at greater risk of developing skin cancer if you:

  • Have fair skin
  • Burn easily
  • Spend time out in the sun without sunscreen

Putting on sunscreen is one of the easiest, most effective ways to protect your skin. You need to:

  • Apply a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher daily
  • Apply a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher if you are outside for an extended period of time

You should also try to minimize exposure to harmful UV rays by:

  • Avoiding being in direct sunlight between 10 AM and 4 PM
  • Wearing protective clothing, including hats and sunglasses
  • Avoiding tanning booths

Another great way to protect your skin is to do a self-check of your skin at least once each week. Look at your moles, because changes in the size, shape, or color of a mole can be an early sign of skin cancer.

Look for moles that are:

  • Large, with a diameter greater than 6 millimeters
  • Poorly defined, with ragged, irregular borders
  • Not uniform in shape, or asymmetrical
  • New, or that have regrown after previous removal

If you notice any suspicious moles, you should visit your dermatologist for a skin exam. This is especially important if you are at high risk for skin cancer. Early detection leads to early treatment and a better outcome for you.
